NYC Union Labor Day Parade 2015

If the thought ever crossed your mind that Unions are on the decline,  you may find yourself thinking the opposite when you see thousands and thousands of Union-members marching in solidarity up Fifth Avenue at the Annual New York City Labor Day Parade (organized by the NYC Central Labor Council, & takes place the first Saturday AFTER Labor Day Weekend).   The parade kicks-off at 10am, starting at 44th Street marches up Fifth Avenue and continues till 4pm, ending at 68th Street.

There is also a Labor Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral the morning of the parade, at 8:30am.  The pews were full with more than 500 union members and leaders.

Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed a day be set aside to celeb1882_LaborDayParaderate labor on the first Monday in September.  “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City in 1882.
